MASDANZA brings the excellence of Canarian contemporary dance to the Guiniguada Theatre

The capital's coliseum will host a gala on 29 September, starting at 20:00, which will showcase the creations of seven dancers and choreographers from the island.

Contemporary dance will once again take to the stage at the Teatro Guiniguada. On 29 September, starting at 20:00 hours, the coliseum will host a new edition of MASDANZA Canarias, a very special gala that will provide first-hand knowledge of the work of local artists, faithful to the commitment of the Festival de Danza Contemporánea de Canarias to support and promote the talent of the island.

During its 28th edition, seven dancers will take to the stage of the theatre located in the Vegueta neighbourhood to perform a total of four pieces, each lasting 15 minutes: Goody by Emiliana Batista and Daniel Morales; Apolo by Daniel Fernández; A ojo by Carmen Fumero and Dácil González and Dual by Andrea Pérez and Abián Hernández.

"Look at me, because I am not able to see myself, nor to see us. Hold me! Because I don't know you anymore and we keep on knowing each other all the time. Give me air, give me your hand, your shoulders and the sway of your hips, and let the sea take them wherever it wants. And in the meantime, you and I will continue sailing on top of the clouds of icing sugar and colours, without ballast and in that tiny moment of growing old with you...". With this brief text, the duo from Santa Cruz de Tenerife formed by Emiliana Batista and Daniel Morales introduce what will be Goody, a piece of their own creation that will also be performed by themselves.

Daniel Fernández will also take to the stage of the capital's theatre to give life to Apolo, a work that will feature music by Elena Frolova, Tchaikovsky, Paradis and Antonio Machín. "The figurative power of man is the game between a racket and his heart-shaped ball, after meeting his enemies, the Adonis of reason", says the choreographer from Gran Canaria, who has received the MASDANZA-SIT (Sala Insular de Teatro) Artistic Residency Award. A project that will be carried out in March 2024 with the sponsorship of the Sala Insular de Teatro, the Teatro Cuyás, the Fundación Canaria de las Artes Escénicas de Gran Canaria and the Cabildo Insular de Gran Canaria.

Likewise, Carmen Fumero and Dácil González (National Dance Prize 2019) assure that in their creation entitled A ojo, "what is observed is framed in the subjective context of the one who observes, so his perception is linked to the way of looking at things and facts in each space. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

Finally, Andrea Pérez and Abián Hernández, who will perform Dual, will project through movement reflections on the duality present throughout the universe, "where any element has a pair of fundamental forces that are opposites, but which complement each other to achieve a harmonious balance". To this end, they have chosen "the myth of the androgynous figure depicted in Plato's 'The Banquet' to reflect the longing for the restitution of a lost fullness, for a reunion with a totality represented in the eternal condemnation of the search for the other half".

Directed by the choreographer and dancer Natalia Medina, MASDANZA will hold its official sections and parallel sections from 29 September to 28 October thanks to the alliance of the production company Qué tal estás producciones with the Culture Department of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council, through Promoción de la Ciudad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Promotion of the City of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria). The Festival also has the important support of INAEM - Ministry of Culture and Sport -, the sponsorship of the Government of the Canary Islands, as well as the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Tourism of Gran Canaria and Acción Cultural Española (PICE Programme).
